General Information about our Ongoing Programs
We offer weekly ongoing homeschool programs for the Madison, WI area from Sept thru May. Our Sept-May programs are a weekly commitment with the intention to grow and build upon a foundation. We are absorbing something important just by being outside each week, and having a mentor there to point things out & ask questions serves to allow us to absorb it that much faster & deeper. In order to maintain a quality connection between our mentors and our participants we are holding enrollment to about 6 children per class per instructor.
The consistency of meeting weekly allows for the group to get to know and trust each other and build deep connections to the place we are spending time. Nearly all of what we do takes time to catch. Sing a song once...did you get all the words? Maybe, if you're someone who sings. Practice bowdrill fire-by-friction once and you're likely to get some smoke and a sore knuckle, but keep practicing and eventually you will be blowing a coal into flames. There is both comedy and magic in repetition. We end up laughing a lot, and we end up doing the same things over and over and over again and each time we get better at them. Our baseline activity is exploring and from learning the curiosities and passions of each child; from there we bring in other appropriate activities. See our What We Do page for more information.
Our nature connection programs involve intentional mentored time in the outdoors. The foundation of our mentoring is finding each person’s curiosities & passions and asking questions to lead the learning. Programs are designed to instill a sense of community; to deepen relationships to oneself, to others, & to nature; while bringing out natural powerful human attributes like empathy, happiness, & being truly helpful to name a few. Our hope is that each child/person will grow into their gifts and we design our programs to support this. Not only do people gain understanding and knowledge about the natural world and primitive skills & crafts, they also learn skills for life such as awareness, quiet mind, creative problem solving, peacemaking, good conduct, intentional action, reflective processes, etc.
