Service, community, Personal growth....and a job
Hiring Mentors
We are a small local business working with kids & families to connect with nature, each other, and ourselves. We are looking for mentors for our Home School groups that meet Sept thru May; as well as for summer camps. Our groups play, sing, wade, climb, catch, harvest, craft, honor, celebrate and slow down into rhythm with the earth and a deeper slower emotionally awake and aware humanness.
We're looking for mentors who can step into the role of uncle/auntie, or grandmother/grandfather (depending on the mentor's age/life stage) to the kids they work with and who want to come be part of our community.
We are looking for someone who:
* is ready & able to be outside in all weather Sept-May here in WI (about the only weather we cancel for is 40 degrees and raining and dangerous driving weather. Expect to be out in sunshine, clouds, rain, cold, wind, bugs, etc).
* can drop in and be a kid with the kids, as well as step out and be an adult when guidance, first-aid, or other support is needed
* is interested in collaborating with another mentor to create lesson plans based on natural rhythms, phenology, human psychology & development, and your own personal excitement, learning, and skills.
* is reflective and shows up with ideas each week
* has other work/ways to support themselves (we're starting off offering part-time)
* can bring inspiration, authenticity & creativity to this work / play
You may be the right person if you:
* have excitement for adventuring in nature & can tap into awe and role model curiosity toward plants, tracks, birds, animals, insects, trees, clouds, water, etc. (this is more important for us than having identification knowledge & we love that too)
* have a gift of love & patience for supporting kids with their conduct (listening, giving space, support in moments of conflict, & offering little jewels of advice, etc). We actually spend as much time doing this as learning other things.
* have a love & knowledge of or just excitement to learn primitive skills & bushcraft - we warm ourselves & cook on fires we make, we harvest wild food, we build shelters, carve spoons & bowls, and much more. (Again, not necessary that you are skilled in this, but an interest and openness to engaging)
* can facilitate a group through one or more of the following: gratitude, singing songs, can tell epic stories, support creating nature sculptures, writing stories/poetry, doing yoga, or other art/practice
* You're on a path to being more and more authentically yourself, self care is important to you, tending to the earth is important to you, and you see the ties between these acts.
* Want to get involved based on reading this description
We're ongoingly looking for folks to help out. One group per week would be for 6 hours in the field, and 1 hour of planning before hand, and up to 1 hour of reflective conversation post time in field. We have some half day groups where we might need another mentor, so this could be a possibility. Planning calls are scheduled 1-5 days before time in the field.
Time in the field looks like : meeting and talking with kids & parents in the morning, facilitating the group of kids through a day of adventure/craft/practice/play, and catch parents up at the end of the day what we've been up to, kid awesomeness/challenges, injuries, etc.
We have a week off at Thanksgiving, about a month off at holiday/new years break, and two weeks in the spring. Hours also available in the summer.
We have an idea of what we want in terms of a mentor & when/how we need that person. We also recognize you may have another idea of how to bring yours gifts forward into a community like ours. Please be in touch if you have another idea of how to contribute.
Please let us know of your interest in being a mentor with us by emailing [email protected] : introduce yourself and share some of your practical skills & interests/passions, career thoughts/goals in relation to this work, and relevant experience.
From there we'll be in touch to conduct interviews.
